Last Sunday, January 24th, the 16 best Mortal Kombat X players from around the world converged on the ESL Studios in Burbank, California to compete for the coveted ESL MKX Pro League belt, the title of world champion, and $60,000. Only one would make it to the grand finals and beyond. But who?
Speaking of “The Who”, they had it exactly right when they said “Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.” Because returning season one champion SonicFox came in and pulled off a repeat performance against the competition, hoisting the belt once again, and proving himself in front of a sold-out audience.
After beating his first two opponents 3-0, SonicFox had his toughest challenge of the day when he faced teammate Biohazard in a series that eventually went to Fox three wins to two. Meanwhile, Scar also bested his first two opponents 3-0 and also took down Fox’s teammate WoundCowboy 3-0 to set up a series with the reigning champion.
SonicFox bested Scar 3-1 in that matchup and sent him to the Bottom Bracket, where Scar once again topped WoundCowboy and set up a rematch with SonicFox in the grand finals. But that’s where Fox showed Scar the skills that won him the title last time as he bested the challenger 5-0 in a best of seven.
Congratulations to SonicFox as the first ever back to back world champion in the history of Mortal Kombat X. We would like to congratulate everyone who competed and watched throughout the season, and we look forward to even more Mortal Kombat action soon!
