The Wacken Open Air festival in Germany is an absolute pilgrimage for fans of heavy metal music across the globe. This year, attendees were also treated to a taste of esports courtesy of the ESL Arena, a special space where pro gramers, bands and fans were able to enjoy titles like PUBG and League of Legends.
Metal and esports?
It might not sound like the most obvious of combinations, but think about it for a second: the fanatic crowd that gathers for a weekend to celebrate their biggest passion... the combination of the very best at their trade in one single place… and of course, the energy that emanates from the center stage. These are all key elements at both metal festivals and esports mega events like ESL One or the Intel Extreme Masters.
No wonder then that attendance at our ESL Arena surpassed all expectations. Fans and bands from across all walks of metal found their way to our gaming area to watch the pros duke it out at high levels of League of Legends, relax fighting stick in hand with some casual Street Fighter and enjoy the wonders of VR gaming throughout the weekend.
Wacken is all about love for the community and coming together. We are proud to have been welcomed into the mosh pit with open arms and look forward to dusting off our darkest clothes to return some day.
