Intensive English Program

  • Six levels, from Beginning to Advanced.
  • 18 class hours per week are required: 15 hours of Listening/Speaking and Reading/Writing in the morning or afternoon, plus one 3-hour Special Topic chosen from academic, language skills, business, cultural, or test preparation topics.
  • Optional free tutoring sessions available.
  • Program highlights include placement tests at the start of each term; an orientation program before classes start; certificates for successful completion of each full or half term; small classes for individualized attention; and teachers with advanced degrees.

Global Business English Program (GLOBE)

  • Designed to meet the needs of both prospective MBA and pre-MBA students as well as business professionals.
  • For participants with a university degree who place into ELC level 4 Speaking/Listening AND Reading/Writing (or higher).
  • 21 hours of classes include the Language of Business Information, an integrated skills course covering key business concepts and vocabulary; an advanced level Reading/Writing course focusing on essay writing, academic reading skills, and strategies for academic coursework; and a choice of two Special Topic classes such as TOEFL and GMAT preparation.
  • Special features include networking opportunities, lectures at the College of Business, MBA application workshops, and an MBA class observation.

Drexel International Gateway

  • A conditional admission program that provides qualified undergraduate applicants with a foundation year of quality academic and English language courses.
  • Applicants must meet Drexel University academic requirements.
  • Secondary school graduates with TOEFL scores from 53 to 70 or IELTS from 5.0 to 5.5 can apply for admission.
  • The program begins in the Fall term and prepares students to begin full-time undergraduate study at Drexel the following Fall. Most students complete the program in 9 months (3 terms). Up to 17 university credits are available.
  • Students prepare for degree programs in over 70 majors including bioscience, communications, computer science, engineering, business, and more.
  • American Cultural Connections® enables International Gateway students to make contact with and experience American university students, campus life, and their community.

ELC Features

  • Weekly Activities: These can include visits to Washington D.C. or New York City, theater and museum outings in Philadelphia, intramural sports activities, and many other activities and events on the Drexel campus and throughout Philadelphia.
  • Conversation Network: ELC students can meet and exchange conversation with American students at Drexel University.
  • Allison Rose Fellowships: Scholarships of $1,200 are awarded each term to continuing full-time students who help with orientation for new students, lead the activities program, and perform office work at the ELC.
  • Free access to Drexel University facilities: ELC students can use the Drexel library, gym and athletic facilities, language lab, computer lab and wireless internet service at no charge.

Housing Choices

Because different students prefer different lifestyles, several types of housing are available.

  • Drexel Residence Halls: On-campus accommodations in double rooms or suites are available on a limited basis.
  • Right at Home Homestay: Students live in an American home where they can practice English and learn about American culture.
  • The Axis: A luxury student residence with a reasonable price, just minutes from campus. Meal plans available.
  • International House: A large dormitory-style residence providing private bedrooms with shared bath and kitchen facilities, near the Drexel campus.
