About Our Program

The Intensive English Language Program of Temple University offers twenty hours of study per week for beginning to advanced students (six levels) in three 14-week semesters per year, each consisting of two seven-week sessions. There are about 160 students in the program each semester, though class size is small with 10-15 students in each class.

Accreditation and Instructors: The IELP is accredited by the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP). Instructors hold a Masters degree in TESOL, or Ph.D. in a related field and have at least five years' experience in teaching here in the U.S. or abroad.

Tuition: Tuition for a fourteen-week semester is about $3,000, which includes fees and health insurance.

Services for International Students: The Office of International Services and the Intensive English Language Program at Temple University provide a number of services for International students in addition to English language instruction.

Applying to Temple University: The graduate programs in the various Colleges within the University each have their own requirements, and therefore, handle their own admissions. All undergraduate applications are centrally processed through Undergraduate Admissions. The Assistant Director of the IELP can facilitate this process by helping students to complete their applications and personally delivering them to the International Evaluator in Undergraduate Admissions.

Bridge Program: The TOEFL score required for undergraduate or graduate admission to Temple University may be waived for students who have a minimum TOEFL score and a satisfactory academic transcript from their high school or university, and who successfully complete the IELP's Academic Bridge Program. The Bridge Program focuses on academic skills such as reading, lecture listening and note-taking, thus continuing to develop students' language skills through content courses.

Application to American universities: The Philadelphia area has the second largest conglomerate of universities in the US. Here at the OIS/IELP, we help students understand the American university system and facilitate the application process, regardless of which universities they apply to.

Conversation Class and Conversation Partners: We also provide free opportunities for students to practice speaking English through extracurricular conversation classes and by helping to pair International students with American English speaking conversation partners.

Activities: The IELP arranges excursions, events and activities that expose students to cultural and social aspects of their host country. Day trips include tours to Washington, DC, New York City, and Lancaster County, and skiing in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. Locally, students are accompanied to museums, sporting and musical events, and shopping and architectural tours in the city of Philadelphia.

The Internet and access to the World Wide Web: Like matriculated Temple students, IELP students may also open an e-mail (electronic mail) account for free! This will enable them to access the library, communicate with their classmates, and even send messages to their home countries.
