For 125 years, John Carroll University (JCU) has been focused on graduating students with intellect and character in the Jesuit tradition of educational excellence. Located in the beautiful, safe Cleveland suburb of University Heights, our 60-acre campus is easy to navigate and offers state-of-the-art facilities including the Dolan Center for Science and Technology, a newly-renovated TV studio and media lab, and fitness centers for organized sports and recreation. We offer 52 distinct fields of study (majors) and a wide array of other academic concentrations that enrich our students and add depth and flexibility to their studies. Admission is selective and focused on maintaining our excellent success rates for students graduating in four years.
Nearly 3,000 undergraduates and 800 graduate students come from 29 U.S. states and 35 countries. Inside the classroom, they are taught in small classes (rarely exceeding 35 students) by 202 full-time faculty members, 91% of whom possess the highest degree possible in their field. These professors teach undergraduate students and focus on classroom discussion rather than lecture. They also serve as academic advisors to students to offer personal support and monitor student progress throughout their time at JCU.
The most common majors include accounting, management, biology, communication, education, political science and psychology, although because our philosophy of education is rooted in the liberal arts, each of our academic programs is strong. We offer students many opportunities to engage in meaningful research and access to state-of-the-art technology and a completely wireless campus.
John Carroll University has received numerous distinctions. For the 22nd consecutive year, U.S. News and World Report ranked JCU in the top 10 among universities in the U.S. Midwest. In addition, we were ranked #15 by the same publication in the “Great Schools, Great Prices” category. Our business programs are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), placing us in the top 11% of business programs worldwide.

John Carroll students are keenly aware that the world is also their classroom. The University offers study abroad and service-based immersion programs that take students around the globe for semester, summer, or semester-break trips. Students provide exemplary service to communities near and far. Outside of the classroom, students engage in intramural and club sports, student government, WJCU radio, The Carroll News newspaper, fraternities and sororities, and nearly 100 student organizations. Roughly 90% of our first and second year students live in one of our residence halls on campus, and there are also ample private apartments (many owned by the university) nearby. Although there are grocery stores, restaurants, and shops within walking distance of campus, there is also a campus bus shuttle service to bring students to these destinations as well as shopping malls and cinemas.
Cleveland is an ethnically-diverse and culturally-rich home to many groups – from Eastern European immigrants in the early 1900s to an influx of Chinese, Indian, Latino, Middle Eastern, and Vietnamese residents over the last 30 years. Northeast Ohio features the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Playhouse Square (the nation’s second largest theatre district), the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Museum of Art, and easy access to many other restaurants, museums, professional sports team venues, and parks and recreational sites. Our location allows students to take advantage of many career and internship opportunities, and because of our close proximity to a number of other universities in greater Cleveland, students are able to sample coursework at eleven different institutions (including Case Western Reserve University).
Students at John Carroll become connected to the larger network of Jesuit schools – a network of more than 900 colleges, universities, and secondary schools around the world. Our 450-year-old Jesuit education tradition emphasizes reflection and personal inquiry as students gain a deeper level of knowledge in their chosen field of study and across the liberal arts curriculum. John Carroll believes in the Jesuit philosophy of “Cura Personalis,” educating each student as a whole person – mind, body, and spirit – so that they become well-rounded, well-educated individuals. As part of this commitment, we have introduced an initiative called “Soft Landings,” not only just a series of programs but a philosophy on how the University approaches working with international students. This is John Carroll’s way of making sure each student will make a successful transition to campus when it comes to cultural preparation, conversation skills, written skills, and preparing for an American education system that is heavily discussion-based.
