Stony Brook University is one of the top three public research universities in the U.S. It is located about 60 miles (90 km) east of Manhattan on the scenic north shore of Long Island in a safe, suburban community close to New York City. The nearby historic Stony Brook Village houses museums and fashionable shops. From the neighboring town of Port Jefferson, ferries run to Connecticut, a gateway to Boston and New England.
The IEC offers non-credit courses from beginning to advanced levels around the year. The IEC faculty consists of experienced instructors holding advanced degrees. Class size is small, which makes it possible for each student to receive personal attention from the instructors.
IEC morning classes meet Monday through Friday for a minimum of three hours. They include the following skills: Speaking and Listening, Writing and Structure, and Reading and Vocabulary.
Afternoon elective classes and workshops include: Grammar, American Film and Culture, Business English, Conversation/Pronunciation, Idioms, and TOEFL Preparation. Many of these electives offer sections for students at different levels.
Students in the advanced IEC level may register for university courses.
The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) and the Institutional TOEFL are given each semester.
IEC students have the opportunity to enhance their English skills by using appropriate materials in the University's Language Learning Center.
Students who successfully complete an advanced level IEC program and are academically eligible for undergraduate admission may apply to Stony Brook without having to take the TOEFL exam.
On-campus housing and meal plan are available.
The IEC offers many social events and activities for students to improve their English including a graduation ceremony and field trips to New York City and Long Island landmarks. There are many services and facilities provided by the University at Stony Brook that IEC students have the opportunity to take advantage of.
