About Saint Louis University

Saint Louis University is a Jesuit, Catholic university ranked among the top research institutions in the nation. The University fosters the intellectual and character development of more than 12,300 students. Founded in 1818, it is the oldest university west of the Mississippi and the second oldest Jesuit university in the United States.

A Jesuit education encourages students to become "women and men for others" - people who use their knowledge and skills to improve their communities, their countries and their world. A Jesuit education also is known for its academic rigor - challenging courses and professors who expect the best.

Although SLU is a Jesuit, Catholic university, students of all faiths are welcomed and supported at Saint Louis University.

Academics

SLU's Jesuit tradition of educating the whole person offers a strong foundation of courses in the liberal arts to compliment a student's chosen major, providing a solid base for solving problems and preparing for the future.

SLU, a mid-size university with a wireless campus, offers nearly 100 undergraduate programs, many of which continue to the master's and doctoral levels. The most popular majors are biology, nursing, business, psychology and physical therapy. U.S. News & World Report has praised many of SLU's programs, ranking them among the best in the United States. 99 percent of the faculty have reached the highest degree in their fields.

To further students' education, Saint Louis University has a second campus in Madrid, Spain. It's the only fully accredited U.S. university recognized by the Spanish higher education authorities. Full-credit classes are offered in the arts, sciences, business, communication and engineering. Travel is easy within the city and to other European hotspots.

Campus Life

Saint Louis University has more than 170 clubs and organizations that cover a wide variety of students' interests - cultural, theatre, media, leadership, academic and more. In addition, SLU brings the biggest names in entertainment to campus for free concerts and performances.

SLU competes in 18 NCAA Division I sports with other notable universities. In 2008, SLU opened Chaifetz Arena, a state-of-the-art sports complex that gives home-court advantage to the men's basketball, women's basketball and volleyball teams. Students also enjoy club and intramural sports such as cycling, martial arts and table tennis. And all students can take advantage of the Simon Recreation Center, which boasts brand-new workout equipment, racquetball courts, swimming pools and fitness classes.

SLU offers many services and amenities to its international Billikens, including a special welcome and orientation session, immigration advising, on-campus jobs and housing assistance. Additionally, SLU boasts an on-campus student center with a bank, salon, bookstore, dining and entertainment, and the University provides shopping trips to local malls and stores. And to showcase culture and talent, students can participate in special clubs and activities such as the International Student Federation and Atlas Week.
