Wayne State University is more than just campus. It is, and has always been, a stepping stone to opportunity and a doorway to success. It’s a place where the pursuit of knowledge is available to all; where ideas and curiosity advance our understanding and enrich and preserve our lives; and where the classroom extends into the real world and students are prepared to excel after graduation. Wayne State University (WSU) is a vibrant, thriving microcosm of the real world and a center for dialogue, debate and discovery. Our impact radiates far beyond our urban campus and community. It is felt across the United States and around the world in courtrooms and boardrooms, theaters and laboratories, schools and hospitals, and libraries and neighborhoods. We don’t just educate people: we transform them, so they can transform the world.

Diverse Student Body

Wayne State University is home to nearly 29,000 students, including students from over 60 countries. WSU has 13 schools and colleges offering more than 370 programs, with a strong network of students and staff to make you feel comfortable and welcome.

Exceptional Academic Programs

Academic excellence is our hallmark. In each department, you’ll find renowned faculty and modern resources that will prepare you for the competitive job market — both now and in the future.

Experienced Faculty

Our faculty members don’t just speak from a textbook — they teach from experience. Wayne State students learn current theories from leaders in their fields, preparing them for future success.

Facilities

Wayne State is constantly upgrading facilities to give students the best study environments available. Recent improvements include expanded classrooms and labs in several buildings. Our wireless network is available in most WSU instructional areas. Our libraries’ computer labs give you access to research, homework and your WSU email.

Research

WSU is ranked among the nation’s top public universities in research expenditures according to the National Science Foundation, with research and development expenditures of nearly $260 million in 2012. We are a member of the University Research Corridor, along with the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. Together, we generate 94 percent of all federal research dollars in Michigan and ensure that students at all levels have opportunities to pursue their research interests.

Office of International Students and Scholars

The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) is dedicated to supporting and enhancing your educational, cultural and social experiences. OISS collaborates with the campus and surrounding community to create and maintain an inclusive, global campus. Whether it’s a ride to the grocery store, help with your resume or academic support, OISS can help you navigate the university system.

Campus life

Our students develop life and leadership skills by participating in numerous campus activities. Nearly 400 student organizations sponsor everything from ethnic celebrations and political debates to campus blood drives. If we don’t have an organization focused on your passions, we’ll help you start one. Being active on campus sharpens the communication and planning skills employers seek, and help you build your resume. Plus, it’s fun.

Living on Campus

Living in one of Wayne State’s apartments or residence halls is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It’s a chance to grow as an individual as you work toward your educational goals. Here, you will meet people from diverse backgrounds and make friendships that can last a lifetime. Plus, you’ll be close to your classes, the libraries, the Student Center, and the Recreation and Fitness Center.

English Language Institute

As the only metro Detroit’s only intensive English language program, the English Language Institute (ELI) at Wayne State specializes exclusively in teaching English communication, cultural orientation and academic preparation skills to non-native English speakers from all over the world. Applicants who are not proficient in English may enroll in ELI. Plus, most departments offer conditional admission to qualified students, allowing them time to improve their English skills before enrolling directly into their degree programs.

A major focus of the ELI is helping learners build confidence in their own language abilities as a result of their increasing English proficiency. The ELI offers comprehensive and innovative language programs that provide students with the best English instruction, the latest methodologies and the most up-to-date language-learning technology in the United States.
